Graphic Novel Discussion: Tales From La Vida

Join the Rogers Park Branch as we read and discuss Tales From La Vida. This collection of more than 80 short stories, compiled by Frederick Luis Aldama (Long Stories Cut Short: Fictions from the Borderlands; Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics), from a range of Latiné creators (e.g., Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, Roberta Gregory, Kat Fajardo) all center on the larger themes of Latiné identity. They include an array of autobiographical pieces, the commonalities among them nicely showcased in various styles, some cartoony, some realistic, and some rough and raw. Despite the broad artistic differences, many similar themes emerge around religion, spirituality, family and tradition, LGBTQ issues, and living in a marginalized community. Several accounts detail mixed-race Latinés struggling to find identity within and outside their own communities, while others depict how the absence of diverse role models in media led the author/artist to tell their own stories as inspiration to future generations.Accessibility Need sign language interpretation or other accessibility assistance for this event?
