About this event
Join other aspiring authors this fall for Write at CPL, a series of workshops presented by our partners at Story Studio. This workshop will focus on Non-Chronological Structures in Memoir and is led by David Stuart MacLean. Chronology is great but not all of our stories are chronological. Associative structure (a term we will define in the workshop) is usually found in poetry, but some writers have been adapting its use to memoir. Maggie Nelson and Carmen Maria Machado are two examples of writers doing this kind of work. We'll play around with these kinds of structures and what kind of freedom they allow for our memoir writing. David Stuart MacLean is a PEN/America Award winner known for his memoir The Answer to the Riddle Is Me and novel How I Learned to Hate in Ohio. His writing appears in The New York Times, Ploughshares, The Guardian, Guernica, Bennington Review, and on This American Life. He co-founded the award-winning Poison Pen Reading Series in Houston. The New York Times said he is "an exceedingly entertaining psychotic." He lives in Chicago. Due to limited space, registration is required.
