About this event

Dr. John A. Merchant will speak about the major contributions of writers such as Natalie Petesch, Susan Strempek Shea, Leslie Pietrzyk, and Martyna Majok to the image, place, and understanding of women in Polish American literature. Dr. John A. Merchant is the Director of Polish Studies and a Teaching Professor and at Loyola University, where he teaches a variety of courses on Polish and Polish American literature as well as comparative courses on Polish and Irish literature. Dr. Merchant’s monography The Impact of Irish-Ireland on Young Poland, 1890-1918 was published by East European Monographs, an imprint of Columbia University Press, in 2008. He has also written and spoken extensively about Polish American literature. His article “The Scars of St. Stuart: Time-traveling Down 26th Street” will appear in the forthcoming volume of essays Creative Presence and Polish American Chicago, published by Academic Studies Press. This event is organized in cooperation with Polish American Library Association (PALA).
