About this event
Haitians Love Dominicans will be hosting a Film Festival at Feeding Tree Garden on Saturday October 10th. Five short stories will be shown: Buckskin 17 - Filmmaker Mars Verrone has a conversation with their grandfather, Carroll B. Williams, Jr., in the twilight of his life. Driven by his love of forests and by personal ambition, Williams persisted against institutional racism to become the first Black forester in the U.S. Forest Service. This close exchange between grandchild and grandfather is shown through layered imagery of personal memorabilia and the lush woodlands that Williams worked to protect. Shot among the redwood forests and the carefully arranged spaces of Williams’s home, the film reflects on legacy, the natural world, and the shifting landscapes of time and generations. As his memory begins to fail, the redwoods stand witness to a lifetime. Mercy 15:37 (on loop begins the festival) - The poetic short, directed by Philip Szporer, voices issues of race, place, and identity, and dives into the double-voiced discourses of a particular Black literary tradition concerning the complication of the slave learning their captor’s language. Remedy for Broken Faith 4:34 - Visual Poetry Tambu 22:59 - Tambu is a documentary exploring TambuFest, a day-long celebration of drumming and dance in Jamaica. Combining footage from the TambuFest festival, with images from plantation ruins in Eastern Jamaica, slave dungeons in Ghana, and archival photographs, the film considers how drumming and dance rituals remember African Diasporic histories of slavery, indenture, and survival. Narrated by master-drummer and TambuFest co-founder, Junior “Gabu” Wedderburn. Diaspora Power 55 mins - Inspired by the stories of women and men arriving in the 1960s and 1970s, Diaspora Power explores the immigration and integration journeys of the Haitian community in Quebec.
