Between Earth and Sky
About this event
Artists Heidi Heinonen and Maj Sjö’s joint exhibition, Between Earth and Sky, brings together two distinct forms of visual expression. 28 September – 24 October Between Earth and Sky brings together two distinct forms of visual expression. One opens up the landscape, while the other fills it with life. Together, they invite the viewer to enter a natural world where openness and abundance complement one another. The paintings of Heidi Heinonen and Maj Sjö approach nature from different perspectives, yet share a common foundation. Both artists work intuitively, building their paintings through layers and placing a strong trust in colour – in its subtle nuances as well as its powerful contrasts.Maj Sjö’s works unfold as spaces in which colour, light and form are experienced as moods rather than recognisable landscapes. Heidi Heinonen, in turn, creates lush botanical worlds inspired by a longing for nature’s abundance and richness of colour. The paintings do not depict a particular season as observed, but rather an experience of nature shaped by memory, anticipation and imagination.Although the artists’ visual languages are distinct, their works are united by the constant presence of nature, an intuitive approach to painting and a desire to interpret the world around them. The exhibition invites us to pause and experience nature – not through predetermined answers, but through our own observations and experiences. Heidi HeinonenHeidi Heinonen works with acrylic paint. Her works often develop through a lengthy process in which colours, forms and layers gradually find their own order. Music is an important starting point for her painting, with its rhythm and atmosphere guiding the development of each work. Heinonen is particularly interested in the ability of colour to convey experiences and emotional states without relying on overly representational storytelling. Maj SjöMaj Sjö works primarily in oils. Her practice is guided by observations and experiences inspired by nature, particularly the sea and the Finnish archipelago. Sjö’s paintings combine the sensuous materiality of oil paint with an intuitive approach, allowing each work to develop gradually through the interplay of colour, composition and painterly gesture.
